The artifact I have chosen to write my rhetorical analysis on is a shirt that I bought from Wal-Mart. I have not really began any of my writing as of yet. I am thinking of writing on the appeal to pathos and logos. I was shopping for clothes to wear during my observation days at Lubbock high school. We have to dress in “teacher clothes” and, of course, that means we need to look professional. I not only wanted to look professional, but stylish as well. As I was browsing through the shirts, I found one that had an extra descriptive tag on it. The words that caught my eye were “instantly slimming”. Wow! Who doesn’t want something that instantly slims you? Well of course that appealed to my pathos. I tried the shirt on and indeed – it was slimming and very flattering. The next thing that I was interested in was the price. Being a single mom, I cannot afford to pay designer prices for my clothes. The price was perfect, under 20 bucks. That particular aspect appealed to my logos – factual data and statistics. And finally, the last prerequisite was: color. Did the color flatter me? Did I have any pants that I would be able to mix and match it with? Yes! The color looked great, and it just so happened that I had 2 pairs of pants to mix and match it with… I am unsure about that one; it seems to appeal to my pathos and logos.
So far, that is about all I have for my analysis. I am sure if I sat down and made some kind of outline, I would have a good start – its just finding the time to do so.

Wow, interseting story I guess I have to go get that shirt because I need to slim down my self. lol Well your topic is great and I would love to read it as soon as your done with the paper. And I understand on the budget thing as well, were all college students and I doubt some of us can pay for really expensive name brand clothes that look just like other clothes.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting! I think your paper is going to be very interesting! I know all girls are influenced by clothes that are slimming. I know we are all influenced by price, too. I think we are also influenced by how expensive something is. Although we can’t afford it, we might really want to buy it because of it’s name brand.
ReplyDeleteSounds like its going to be a good paper. Most of the items I have considered definitely appeal to both my pathos and logos. I think that clothing is something we really use alot to persuade people and influence them to think a certain thing about us.
ReplyDeleteI understand all too well the issues women have with clothing. I was shopping with her the other day and she was looking for something nice to wear yesterday for her new boyfriend. She didn't raise me, but we have developed a sort of mother-son-best friend hybrid relationship over the past several years and we share many of the same sensibilities, so she likes to take me shopping. I just sort of mull around the store within earshot and wait for her to ask me about a garment she likes. I'm quite astounded by what is printed on the tags. I think it's the perfect subject for a rhetorical analysis.
ReplyDeleteNot to exclude myself from the clothing issue...guys clothes are much simpler, but I have noticed that every year there seems to be another fit for jeans and t-shirts. At every cubby-hole jeans wall there is a chart with pictures of dude's legs showing you how each fit differs. I have found that I am a low, boot-cut man. Just another note, I don't get the skinny jeans thing. Looks very uncomfortable.
I think that you have chosen a good object...I wish I could find an object!!!
ReplyDeleteI think it's really interesting that you chose an object that everyone can really relate to, especially since the majority of the students in our class are girls! I think that you chose an artifact that you can relate to many aspects of our class.
ReplyDeleteVery nice!! I don't know about you, but now that I am older, I am not ashamed to buy clothes at places like Wal-mart. But when I was in junior high or high school, I would have NEVER admitted to that. As stupid as it sounds to me now, it was embarrassing because a lot of my friends had a lot of money and their parents could afford designer things for their kids. If you ever felt like this before, you could maybe incorporate that kind of feeling into your paper. Maybe, its just an idea!
