Well obviously technology will take rhetorical education to all kinds of new heights. There are so many advances in what the internet and computers can do, it is amazing. After watching that video in class and again at home, that is when it really hit me – I am a huge part of a generation gap. As a teacher, I want to stay informed on the latest technologies. But really, is that possible? I never thought I would be thought of as obsolete some day… will teachers be replaced with computers? I am sure that is highly unlikely, but as my son and I sat watching the video, we were talking about that possibility. There are other jobs out there, though, that probably will be replaced with computers.
Anyway back to the questions at hand… yes I think I can make technology a part of my pedagogy. There are many schools that have laptops instead of textbooks. Wireless internet in the schools will make using the internet in lesson plans very easy. I know that there are still some students who do not have access to the internet in their homes, so we would have to do it all in class, but it still is a very useful tool. Web 2.0 seems pretty interesting, although I fail to see exactly how it differs from Web 1.0. The technology is a little more advanced, I guess. Look how much technology is used in this class. Everything we need to know for this class is posted online… an online syllabi rather than a paper one has its advantages. One click of the mouse and there it is. The internet and technology are very useful tools in any classroom. But there are dangers to technology too.
Students who misuse the internet can find themselves in a world of trouble. Doing assignments online makes cheating easier. Students are always going to find a way to abuse any privilege… well some of them. The filters used on school computers limit their access to anything too dangerous or inappropriate, thank goodness.
I look forward to implementing technology into my teaching on a regular basis.

I agree with you Melissa on how you say students will misuse the internet. Students know how to get around to things and eventually cheat, especially students that are younger then us. The younger crowd these days are vastly exposed to technologyl. But I think if we know are students well enough we can figure out if they are cheating or not. I know when I teach I will be using the internet.
ReplyDeletei agree that technology absolutely has to be integrated into our classrooms, but i think that teachers need to be very careful when doing so. they need to make sure that students don't misuse the internet, which is a lot of responsibility for the teacher.

ReplyDeleteI think it is so crazy the world of the internet. Kids think about the internet and they have no idea how their parents made it through school without it but they did, and you did so I think the internet harms kids because they do not go out and look for information they just google it. I mean come on when you go to the library how many computers are being used? ALL and how many books are opened, not that many
ReplyDeleteWhen I think about how many jobs have been eradicated, or have the potential to be eradicated, due to technology, I am a little frightened. I have never really thought about whether or not advances in technology might threaten my job. I guess it isn’t completely impossible!
ReplyDeleteYou say that, “everything we need to know for this class is posted online… an online syllabi rather than a paper one has its advantages. One click of the mouse and there it is. The internet and technology are very useful tools in any classroom.” I hate this about the class. I like to have paper that I can touch, write on, and pull out of my folder at any given moment. I am always paranoid about missing an assignment because I forget to check the online syllabus!
Technology is a little scary. We have all seen movies where computers or robots take over mankind. Maybe that will happen but in a much more subtle way.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't think a computer can teach a child the way a person can. But I guess they could always invent some sort of Rosie Jetson type nanny-bot that can teach kids and protect them from crazy school shooters at the same time.
I never thought I was behind in technology until this class. I mean I use an ipod, but it’s the first one they ever came out with. I have my computer and cell phone, but I definitely don't use them like most students. I do text a lot, but only to keep in touch and gossip with my mom or to remind my boyfriend to feed the dogs. I never considered that I was behind in using my technology tools, but seeing how much others use their technology I feel a little out of date.
